Board of Directors/Executive Positions
One-year terms
PRESIDENT:
- Chairs Annual General Meeting and board meetings (2-3 times/year)
- Attends District Montessori Advisory Committee (LLC) meetings (1/year)
- Speaks and advocates on behalf of Surrey Montessori Society's board and membership
- Liaises with reps from other districts
- Liaises with Montessori Provincial Specialist Association (PSA)
- Formulates SMS goals and objectives with SMS directors and liaisons
- Delegates work to committees and volunteers
VICE-PRESIDENT:
- Assists the president and takes on tasks as delegated
- Fills in for president when he/she is not available
TREASURER:
- Keeps books
- Prepares financial statements for Annual General Meeting and board meetings
- Pays the bills with board and liaisons’ approval
- Can be combined with secretary position
SECRETARY:
- Takes and types minutes at the SMS Annual General Meeting and board meetings
- Distributes minutes to directors and liaisons
- Posts AGM minutes on website for membership
- Maintains files, correspondence and register of members with the assistance of school liaisons
- Helps president ensures annual filings are up to date
- Can be combined with treasurer position
DIRECTOR(S)-AT-LARGE:
- Fills needed committee, liaison or special project roles
- One Director at Large position is required since five directors are required (as per bylaws)
- If the secretary and treasurer jobs are shared, a minimum of two director-at-large positions need to be filled
Non-executive Positions
The SMS is also looking for parents to fill various coordinator and committee positions.
SMS SCHOOL LIAISON (for each school):
School-based reps for the Montessori program
- Ensures communication between the SMS board, principals, teachers and school PACs
- Attends SMS and LLC meetings
- Attends school PAC meetings (when possible) or submits written reports of SMS activities
- Ensures news updates are distributed to school community via flyers or emails
- Ensures school-based SMS adult social fundraising is allocated to the school’s Montessori Resource Committees (see below) accounts
COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR(S):
- Checks SMS gmail account
- Helps update the parent and membership community of important news and educational information via social media channels, website and flyers
ADULT SOCIAL COORDINATOR(S):
- Organizes annual adult social
- parent education events, school-based fundraising and the annual adult social
- Helps prepare grant proposals
PRESCHOOL LIAISON:
- Ensures the local Montessori preschools are aware of the district’s Montessori Information Night in January
- Updates the preschool directory on SMS website
CHAIR(S), MONTESSORI RESOURCE COMMITTEE (one at each school):
- Leads school-based committee that supports teachers through volunteerism, material making, inventory management and SMS school-based fundraising
- Maintains wish list for purchasing/replacements of Montessori materials
MONTESSORI RESOURCE COMMITTEE MEMBERS:
- Helps support Montessori teachers with above jobs – small ones and bigger projects!
