2011 BOARD OF DIRECTORS
President - Delanne Young

This is our 7th year in the Montessori program at Sunnyside Elementary. When I first learned about the Montessori philosophy while first pregnant 12 years ago, it resonated with me personally on so many levels. When it came time to choosing a pre-school for my children, a traditional Montessori program was our top choice. I strongly believe this method should be available to all children in the public school system and am so thankful that SD 36 has supported the growth of the Montessori program over the years. My role as SMS president is one that I take very seriously. With my background in marketing and promotions, I am committed to carrying on the hard work parents began 30 years ago when the Surrey Montessori Society initially formed to support Surrey's first public Montessori classroom.

Past President - Sarah Rose

Hi my name is Sarah Rose and Montessori Education is a passion of mine.  I have my Early Childhood Education Certificate and my Montessori Teacher Training birth to nine years old.  I have been actively involved in the Montessori community for 8 years now.  Through many in depth research papers as well as life experiences, I firmly believe that Montessori based principles and philosophy should be incorporated in all forms of education.

One of the most important components of a Montessori classroom and school is deep and profound respect and faith in each child to reach their utmost potential within the prepared environment.  I am thrilled that Surrey School District 36 offers Montessori-based education in a public setting.  With the establishment of the program in 1981 in partnership with teachers and parents as well as the district, many children have had the opportunity to experience this beautiful form of education.

SMS strives to facilitate "educating the human potential" through education, fundraising, and hosting workshops.  As an SMS former president I aim to continue the work of my predecessors and offer support to the new President.
We believe in transparency and inclusion. We are always looking for volunteers to assist in making the Surrey Montessori Society as amazing as it can be!

As a mother, I would do anything for my children including driving to the Montessori program. We are among families as far as New Westminster, Langley, Cloverdale as well as all over South Surrey that have past and present drove to this amazing program. It was an easy decision to help out where I could for our school. I have noticed that any little bit of help goes a long way. It's a great community here at Sunnyside; a place where learning is easy. Watching the children blossom, witnessing them reach goals and achieve their potential, is an amazing sight.

Vice President - Stacie Petrie

The Montessori program is beneficial for all students, focussing on each individual's needs. This is why our school has such a diverse community.  Children with special needs, the average and the talented, flourish in the Montessori environment. With hands on learning, concrete ideas are formed and cemented in an education that remain with our students all through their lives. Some children are the 'outside the box' thinkers of the world, with a profound sense of themselves.  Often, they fall through the cracks of the public school system, but we don't let that happen. We help them realize their full potential. I have my Early Childhood Education, 10+ years working with children along with 7 years experience working with individuals with special needs. It is my professional opinion that the Montessori program is the best choice for our family. The community at Sunnyside is very special, inclusive and supportive.

My job with the SMS is to liaison information between our non-profit society and our Montessori teachers at Sunnyside. My students stay with me for 3 years. In that time, it becomes a close knit community where problems are solved peacefully and growth is achieved in a non-threatening environment. Watching the older children teach the younger ones is a very special accomplishment. To teach, a person needs 100% understanding of the materials, and a greater intuitive understanding of their students. The class works together, sharing Montessori materials while helping and caring for one another. It is a special place to come each day. Thank you for your on going support.
